One year ago, we were all hunkering down in our homes. People were stockpiling toilet paper. We had to cancel our summer vacations, kids were stuck at home, and we all needed something to do. So, a lot of people decided to get swimming pools. This year, chlorine has become the new toilet paper. Like the toilet paper shortage of 2020, you may have heard about the chlorine shortage of 2021. But is there really a shortage, or are people just freaking out over nothing? We’re here to tell you what you need to know about the chlorine shortage.
Why is There a Chlorine Shortage?
So, as we said, a lot of people decided to get swimming pools after being stuck at home in 2020. Having a swimming pool at home is great because you can still enjoy a classic summer activity without going away. But, the increase in pool purchases and the rise in pool usage were unexpected. Companies were not fully prepared to meet the increasing demand, but it was manageable.
Then, in true 2020 fashion, a major chlorine plant in Louisiana caught fire in August during Hurricane Laura. This setback made the already impending shortage of chlorine much more likely. While other plants are trying to make up for that loss, demand for chlorine is expected to be greater than the supply this year.
Should I Be Worried About the Chlorine Shortage?
When toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and disinfectants were running low on shelves, some rushed to stockpile those items when we saw them in the store, even when they didn’t immediately need them. It took some time, but eventually, everything was fully stocked on shelves again.
Just like with the toilet paper shortage, you do not need to be worried about the chlorine shortage. We understand the initial panic, but buying just what you need will actually help ensure there is enough chlorine to go around. Stockpiling makes the shortage worse because some people have way more than they need, and everyone else is left struggling to find chlorine while the manufacturers catch up. So, if you just get what you need now, there is more likely to be some in stock when you need more.
Where Can I Find Chlorine for My Pool?
You may have already seen pool supply stores announcing that they don’t think they will have enough chlorine for all of their clients this season. So, you may be wondering where you can get chlorine. If you live in Northeastern Kansas, we have good news for you!
At Energy Center-Manhattan Pool, we expect to be fully stocked on chlorine throughout the pool season. We have brought in additional chlorine in preparation for the season, and will be able to take care of all our existing customers and new clients who historically may have gone elsewhere. We also have chlorine alternatives, like biguanide. However, to make sure everyone gets chlorine, we ask that you only get the amount you need. There should be plenty to give you enough chlorine through the season, while still leaving enough for others. And if you need more, you can always visit us again later! We’ll be here to help you throughout the pool season.
