With a history dating back centuries ago, sauna use is nothing new. However, sauna methods, technology, and styles have developed and changed over time. When looking for the perfect home sauna, there are many powerful and effective options to select from. Perhaps the most important decision is choosing between a traditional steam sauna and an infrared sauna. Let us explain the difference between these two excellent choices and which might be the best home sauna for you.
Different Heating Methods
A traditional sauna with its sweat-inducing steam is what most people think of when they imagine a sauna. In this sauna, you pour water over heated rocks to create steam. This heating method works by heating the air in the sauna, which in turn heats your body. Since the rocks have to be warm to work, a traditional sauna does take approximately 30 to 45 minutes to heat up before you plan to use it.
An infrared sauna uses a very different heating method. It utilizes infrared heat waves to directly heat your body. It is more direct and is capable of penetrating deeper into your muscles. Additionally, this method can be used without preheating time, though waiting a few minutes does allow for the room to heat up and feel more comfortable when entering.
Temperature Difference
Ultimately, the best temperature for your sauna is up to personal preference. However, traditional and infrared saunas operate best at very different temperatures. Traditional saunas typically are heated to 150 to 175 degrees with thick, steamy air. On the other hand, infrared saunas are normally used at 120 to 130 degrees with little to no humidity.
Contrasting Time of Use Per Sauna Session
Since traditional steam saunas run much hotter, a session is typically shorter. You can stay in a traditional sauna for about 10 to 15 minutes per session before needing to stop or take a cool-down break. Infrared saunas, though, can be used for longer. Enjoy an infrared sauna for up to 40+ minutes per session if you like.
Varying Maintenance Needs
Maintenance methods for infrared saunas and traditional saunas are relatively simple and essentially the same: brush down with warm water after each use and then occasionally clean with a mild cleaner to keep it fresh and clean for years to come.
What is different, however, is how often you might have to clean it. Traditional saunas are very humid environments. Without frequent care, this moisture could attract mold, mildew, or other bacteria. Infrared saunas are dry so they require less frequent cleanings.
Differing Location Requirement
