Summer Backyard Activities for Families

We are now in what some refer to as “Quarantine Summer.” Our normal list of summertime must-dos and vacation getaways look a bit different this year. Despite government stay-at-home orders and precaution advisories preventing activities or trips away from home, kid-friendly adventures still can be found. All in the safety of your own backyard! Make it a summer to remember with these summer backyard activities for families. Here are a few ideas to make your home a fun, family vacation spot.

Backyard Family Campsite

Camping is a staple in the summer months. Why not turn your backyard into a campsite? Pitch the tent, set up a fire pit, get out the skewers and s’more ingredients, and grab the flashlights! Adventure can take the form of a hike around the backyard campground where you can teach your kids about plants, local animals, and ecosystems. Summer fun is found sitting around the campfire to roast hotdogs and s’mores. Memories are made when the sun sets as you share ghost stories or reminisce about your favorite past vacations.

Backyard Movie Theatre

You don’t have to miss out on experiencing those summer blockbusters when you create your own drive-in movie theatre in your backyard! All you need is a white sheet, a projector, some seating, and your favorite movie snacks. If you don’t have a projector, check online to find instructions on how to build your own using a smartphone and cardboard. Your seating can be lawn chairs, blankets, pillows, and whatever else you have in your house. Then make a variety of flavored popcorn and get an assortment of candy from your local grocery store. All that’s left is to select the streaming service or DVD of your choice, sit back and press play!

Backyard Pool Oasis

Finally, we can’t forget the pool! Even a quarantine summer can become too hot to handle so keep cool and keep the fun by creating a pool oasis at home! Invest in some lounge chairs, over-sized swan, and unicorn floats for the kids, a cooler full of fruity drinks for fun that can last all summer long. For added fun, create a water obstacle course that kids and adults can enjoy together! Your obstacles can take the form of floats, pool basketball hoops, water toys thrown at the bottom of the pool, and more. Create relay teams for some friendly, family competition as you race by swimming and completing each obstacle. Then, set a timer and on your mark, get set, go!

Show the kids how to create their own fun, right in their backyard! It’s time for summer backyard activities the whole family will enjoy. Come Find Your Gathering Place at Energy Center-Manhattan Pool
