Fire Up the Flavor: Celebrate National Barbecue Month

Fire Up the Flavor Celebrate National Barbecue Month

May is here, and with it comes the smoky, savory aroma of grilled food wafting through neighborhoods across the country. May is National Barbecue Month. It’s a time when backyard chefs, pitmasters, and grilling enthusiasts celebrate one of America’s favorite culinary pastimes.

This month-long event is spearheaded by the Barbecue Council and encourages people to grill and barbecue all year long as a way of life.

Whether you’re a seasoned grill master or just getting started, this month offers the perfect excuse to gather around the fire, sharpen your tongs, and savor the pleasure of cooking and eating outdoors.

The Roots of Barbecue

Barbecuing, as we know it, has evolved over generations and comes from all over the globe. Long before modern grills and smokers hit the market, humans cooked over open flames. Archaeological evidence suggests that early civilizations slow-cooked meats over basic fire pits. They, too, knew how to make their food taste good by allowing the smoke and heat to infuse their food with rich flavor.

The word “barbecue” may have originated from the Caribbean term barbacoa. This is a wooden structure used by indigenous peoples to roast meat over a fire. European explorers adopted the method and the name, and barbecue was born.

Over time, the technique spread and diversified, especially in the American South. Different regions developed their own barbecue styles. Whether it’s Kansas City BBQ, Texas brisket, Carolina pulled pork, or Memphis ribs, each style reflects its region’s unique heritage and preferences.

Grilling is a Staple

You definitely don’t need a specific month to enjoy outdoor cooking. But there is something special about May. The weather is warming up, it’s light longer, and the rhythm of life starts to slow down just a little. And everyone is spending more time outside.

Grilling is more than just a method of preparing food. It’s also a social activity. Grilling is a great way to bring people together and cook over an open flame.

One of the biggest benefits of grilling and smoking during the long Kansas summer is that you keep the heat out of your house by cooking outside. In addition, grilling is another way to focus on healthy eating with lean proteins and fresh veggies.

How to Celebrate National Barbecue Month

There are so many ways to join in the celebration. Here are a few ideas:

1. Buy a Grill

If you are new to grilling and want to get started, it’s time to buy a grill. Or, if you are a season grill master, you might be looking to upgrade your grill or add on and buy an extra one.

Either way, you’ll find just what you need at Energy Center Manhattan Pool:

  • Pellet grills from Smokin’ Brothers. Kansas State University engineering graduate Ryan Eftink meticulously crafted their grills in Missouri. These grills embody professional-grade performance and superior smoking capabilities. Pellet grills offer incredible, consistent temperature control and versatility.
  • Kamado grills from Big Green Egg are versatile grills that allow you to grill, smoke, roast, and even bake!
  • Gas grills from Napoleon Gas Grills. You’ll appreciate their precise cooking, easy cleanup, and swift, accurate heating. With a diverse range of price points, there’s one for everyone.

2. Grill Something New

If you always make the same recipe, consider trying something new. Try grilling fruits like pineapple or peaches for a caramelized, sweet finish. Or toss vegetables like bell peppers, zucchini, or asparagus directly on the grill for a smoky side dish. You might try a different type or cut of meat.

Have a grill that can bake? Try pizza, bread, or apple pie.

Invite friends and family over for a casual weekend barbecue. Whether it’s burgers and hot dogs or slow-cooked ribs, cooking for a crowd is part of summer fun. Add some lawn games, cold drinks, and good music, and you’ve got a memorable gathering.

3. Host a Backyard Cookout

4. Go Beyond Meat

Barbecue doesn’t have to be all about steak and chicken. Grilled plant-based proteins, seafood, and even pizzas are gaining popularity. Tofu, portobello mushrooms, and cauliflower steaks can be transformed with the right seasoning and a bit of char.

5. Upgrade Your Grilling Gear

This month is also a great time to evaluate your equipment. Is your grill in good shape? Do you need to replace some of your tools? Invest in quality tongs, a grill brush, a meat thermometer, or more.

6. Take It on the Road

Don’t limit your grilling adventures to your backyard. Portable grills make it easy to barbecue at the lake, beach, or while camping. Cooking outdoors in new settings adds a layer of fun and spontaneity to your summer grilling.

A Month Made for Memories

National Barbecue Month is about more than grilling and food. It’s about creating memories, celebrating community, and sharing a meal outdoors. Whether you’re a minimalist with skewers and a charcoal grill or someone who loves fine-tuning smoker temps for hours, you’ll love spending more time outside grilling.

So, clean your grill, stock up on your favorite ingredients, and make this May one to remember during National Barbecue Month (and all summer long!).
