Do Saunas Need Regular Maintenance?

Do saunas need regular maintenance?

Have you recently acquired a sauna? If so, you are undoubtedly making the most of it by scheduling regular sessions and beginning to reap all the physical and mental benefits they provide. But as you enjoy your new sauna, you may be wondering, “Do saunas need regular maintenance?” Yes, they do require a little maintenance in order to function at their best and last for many years. However, the good thing is caring for a sauna is pretty simple.

Energy Center-Manhattan Pool is a great source of information on the subject of saunas, and we’d love to go over what is required to keep your sauna in great condition and provide all those benefits to you for a long time.

Preventative Care

Saunas need regular maintenance in the form of preventative care. There are a couple of things you can do to make this maintenance easier.

  • Invest in a good number of towels. Laying towels on the floor of the sauna and on the sauna benches is a good way to absorb sweat, prevent stains, and maintain better hygiene. Use fresh towels for every sauna use.
  • Make sure your feet are clean before entering. Definitely do not wear shoes in the sauna. Keep the dirt and germs out, and your sauna will stay cleaner longer.
  • Don’t jump in the sauna after a sweaty workout or doing dirty yard work. Shower off first and remove any dirt, dead skin cells, and other impurities before entering the sauna.

What to Wear in the Sauna

  • Wear as little as possible in the sauna. A towel wrapped around your torso is ideal. While the towel provides some modesty if you are with others, it mainly absorbs sweat and keeps it off the benches and surfaces that will be used by others. A loose T-shirt and shorts are an option, but we like the idea of just a towel best. You want to expose as much skin to the heat as possible.

Saunas Need Regular Maintenance After Each Use

There are a couple of things you need to do after each time you use your sauna.

  • After using the sauna, simply wipe down the benches with a clean towel.
  • Leave the sauna door ajar while the interior dries out.

Saunas Need Regular Maintenance on a Monthly Basis

If you are using your sauna regularly, your sauna will need regular maintenance about once a month. Don’t worry, this isn’t a big effort. Make sure the sauna is cooled down and you have plenty of ventilation.

  • Sweep or vacuum the sauna floor.
  • Wipe the sauna benches with a mild dish detergent mixed with warm water.
  • Mop the floors with the same mild dish detergent mixed with warm water.
  • Do not use household chemical cleaners in your sauna.
  • Never use lacquers, stains, or sealants on the wood inside your sauna.
  • Make sure the sauna surfaces are completely dry before heating up and using your sauna after cleaning.

Do saunas need regular maintenance? Yes they do, but as you can see, caring for your sauna is not complicated or labor intensive. With preventative care and simple wipe downs your sauna surfaces will stay clean and your sauna will thank you with years of good operation.
