HOT TUB – FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q. HOW OFTEN DO I DRAIN MY SPA?

faqA. Great question! Most people will drain the hot tub about every three months. The answer truthfully depends on how many people sit in the spa and how long, but most spas will be 60-90 days using the math. Rule of thumb, if the water is being “difficult” and you think to yourself “it probably has been a while” then change it.

The actual math formula is:

Spa gallons ÷ Daily Bathers ÷ 3 = Days Between Draining

Q. HOW OFTEN DO I CLEAN MY FILTERS?

faqA. Chemically cleaning your filters should be done about every 2-3 months for chlorine or bromine systems (Every 30 days on SoftSoak or other Biguanide systems.)

Q. HOW DO I CLEAN MY FILTERS?

faqA. Rinse off the filter to start using your garden hose (NEVER THE CARWASH), mix up the filter cleaner for your system (we can help you get the right one at the store) and soak the filter overnight. The next day rinse the filter out thoroughly and let it dry. Carwash rinsing will tear the material of the fabric instantly ruining the filter’s ability to catch those fine particles and letting the filter dry gives the fabric time to strengthen back up before reinstalling into your spa. Doing these things will save you money.

Q. MY SPA ISN’T HEATING, WHAT DO I DO?

faqA. Remove your filters from the hot tub temporarily. Check your owner’s manual to make sure you don’t need to reset anything after doing this. Now wait, see if the spa starts heating. If it does chemically clean or replace your filters. If the hot tub isn’t heating then call the store and we will get out ASAP to see what’s going on.

Q. I CAN’T FIGURE OUT THE TEST STRIP, IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I CAN DO?

faqA. Absolutely! Bring a water sample into the store. We use our Accuscan (a medical grade strip reader) and our expertise to give you a custom-tailored printout for your needs. After you have the printout we will guide you through step-by-step and get you all the products you need.

Q. I’M IN THE MARKET FOR A NEW HOT TUB, HOW MUCH ENERGY DO YOUR SPAS USE?

faqA. The Hot Spring brand we sell is actually extremely energy-efficient. Using as little as $10 per month. Unfortunately most other spa companies can’t say that.

Q. DO YOU SELL USED HOT TUBS?

faqA. We actually do sometimes sell used spas. Please call the store and see if we have any models available for viewing.

WOOD AND PELLET FIREPLACE/STOVE - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q. WHY DOES MY HOUSE FILL UP WITH SMOKE EVERY TIME I TRY TO LIGHT A FIRE?

stovesA. Often this is a cause of a cold chimney. Try taking a piece of newspaper and make a small “torch” out of it. Light the end and carefully place it near the top of your stove or near the damper. This will provide heat up the chimney to establish the initial draft needed for fire to take place.

Another option is that the chimney may be clogged with debris or build-up and need serviced.

Sometimes there may be a negative pressure situation in the house. Slightly open a window near stove to establish an initial fire.

Q. HOW OFTEN SHOULD I HAVE MY WOOD/PELLET CHIMNEY SWEPT AND INSPECTED?

faqA. Any chimney system serving a wood-burning appliance should be inspected annually.

Q. MY WOOD REALLY SEEMS TO SIZZLE AND IS DIFFICULT TO BURN, WHY IS THAT?

faqA. The wood might not be fully cured or dried. Wood needs cut 18-20” length or less and if it is over 6” in diameter, split as well. After the wood is cut and split it needs to be stack off the ground and the top 12-18” covered and sit for nine to twelve months before coming near your stove or fireplace.

Q. THE GLASS IN MY WOOD-BURNING STOVE KEEPS TURNING BLACK WHEN I BURN A FIRE, WHAT’S WRONG?

faqA. Typically this is due to the stove being burned on too “low” of a setting. Try opening the air control up slightly until the fire tries to burn a little cleaner.

Another reason is this can also be due to wood not fully cured or dried. (see above.)

Lastly, sometimes the stove may be outdated. Technology has come a long way and if you stop by our showroom and look at our burn displays for comparison, today’s EPA-certified stoves burn very clean, use little fuel and have air wash technology to keep the glass clean.

Q. HOW DO I CLEAN THE GLASS?

faqA. We recommend Hearth and Stove Cleaner from Speedy White. It is sold at our store and can’t be beat! Another option is to try a piece of newspaper, get it slightly wet and pick up some cool ashes out of the fireplace/stove. This option won’t work as well but can get you out in a pinch.

Q. WHAT PRODUCT DO YOU RECOMMEND FOR LIGHTING THE FIRE?

faqA. We sell a wide variety of fire starters at the store, the most popular is our Dynamite. They all will speed up the process quite a bit saving you time and making it easier.

GAS FIREPLACE/STOVES - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

 Q. THE FIREPLACE/STOVE KEEPS SHUTTING OFF RANDOMLY, IS IT MY FAULT?

faqA. Probably not! Typically as units get some age to them or aren’t regularly maintained, sensors and other devices on the fireplace will wear. This can cause the fireplace to operate problematically. Typically if this is happening regularly you will need to call the store and setup a service call.

(Keep in mind if you use a thermostat to operate your appliance, check its setting. This is a common cause for random operation and is considered normal.)

Q. DO I NEED TO HAVE MY GAS FIREPLACE/STOVE SERVICED?

faqA. Most owner’s manuals recommend servicing your fireplace/stove annually and we agree. This service will help to ensure your unit retains its beauty as well as reliability for the winter to come. This can be done either in the Spring to prepare for next year or in the Fall in preparation for the coming cold.

 Q. I’M SHOPPING FIREPLACES BUT I’M CONFUSED WITH DIRECT-VENT, VENT-FREE AND B-VENT. WHICH ONE SHOULD I USE?

faqA. We would recommend you use the correct one for you needs. Typically this will be a Direct-Vent fireplace because of their efficient technology and flexibility with installations but there are times where we might recommend another choice. Bring in your plans to the store and let our staff guide you to the right decision.

Q. I’M SHOPPING FIREPLACES BUT I’M CONFUSED WITH DIRECT-VENT, VENT-FREE AND B-VENT. WHICH ONE SHOULD I USE?

faqA. Somewhere on your fireplace (usually underneath) there is a gas valve. To start, turn the knob to the “OFF” position (by turning it to the right.) Once there turn the knob one position to the “PILOT” position (you may have to slightly push in to get it to turn to this.) After confirming the arrow or indicator is pointing to “PILOT” then push in and hold the knob, this will start the flow of gas to the pilot and will do so as long as you hold the knob. While holding this knob, you will need to repeatedly push on the igniter (typically a black or red button near the valve) that will make a loud popping sound each time it is pushed. Once the pilot lights continue to hold the knob for about 30-60 seconds. After this time release the knob and the pilot should stay lit and the last step is to turn the knob from “PILOT” to “ON” so the fireplace will light.

Q. MY PILOT WON’T STAY LIT, WHAT CAN I DO?

faqA. If the pilot doesn’t stay lit, try again, and if it still continues to not work you will need to schedule a service call with the store.
